Step 22

Understanding Self-Advocacy

As school becomes more demanding, communication matters more.

Self-advocacy is not about arguing, complaining, or constantly pushing for exceptions.  It's the ability to communicate clearly when you need clarification, support, or guidance instead of staying silent and hoping things improve on their own.

That skill becomes important far beyond school.

Core Idea

Speaking up early often makes challenges easier to manage.

Your One Action

Start your Speak Up Earlier List.

Think about one situation where you currently need:

  • clarification

  • support

  • information

  • help

Then write:

  • who you could talk to

  • one sentence you could use to begin the conversation

Examples:

  • “I wanted to ask about…”

  • “I’m confused about…”

  • “Could you help me understand…”

Then add: “The reason this feels difficult is ______.”
