Step 7

Paying Attention to How You Respond to Challenge

Two students can experience the exact same assignment and react completely differently.

One may think, "This is stressful, but manageable."

Another may shut down immediately, avoid starting, or assume they are bad at the subject.

Your first reaction matters less than you probably think.

Core Idea

An automatic reaction is not the same thing as a final response.

Your One Action

Start your Stress Reaction Replay.

The next time school feels frustrating, write:

  • what happened

  • your first reaction

  • what you did next

  • whether that response helped or hurt the situation

Possible first reactions:

  • avoidance

  • panic

  • procrastination

  • overthinking

  • frustration

  • shutting down

  • asking for help

  • starting immediately

Optional prompt: “What I probably needed in that moment was ______.”

Optional Prompt Answer

Deeper Reflection

When school becomes stressful, what is your most automatic response? Does that response usually help you move forward or make the situation heavier?

Life Question

What pattern usually causes your school stress to build, and what helps you interrupt it earlier?
