Step 10

Beginning Your Essay Work

The essay tends to create a different kind of pressure.

Students often think they need a dramatic story or a perfect topic before they can begin.

That idea stops a lot of people from writing anything at all.

Most strong essays do not start as strong essays.

They start as fragments, observations, random thoughts, half-clear memories.

Core Idea

You usually discover the essay while writing, not before.

Your One Action

Open a blank document titled Essay Fragments File.

Write either:

  • 3 things you think about often or

  • 3 things that genuinely matter to you

Do not explain them yet. Just list them.

Then circle: “The one that feels most connected to my real life is ______.”

Optional Prompt: “The reason this feels more honest is ______.”
