Step 14

Understanding the Difference Between Participating and Contributing

Once activities become familiar, it is easy to slip into autopilot.

You show up, do what is expected, and leave without thinking much about your actual role.

Contribution is different.

It does not require being in charge.

It usually looks smaller and more consistent than that.

Core Idea

Being useful matters more than simply being present.

Your One Action

Start your Contribution Patterns list.

Choose one activity you are involved in.

Then write:

  • one thing you already do that helps the group function better

  • one small way you could contribute more intentionally this week

Examples:

  • helping newer members

  • communicating clearly

  • staying dependable

  • organizing tasks

  • supporting people quietly

  • taking initiative
