Step 17

Beginning to Think More Intentionally About the Future

Junior year is often when conversations about the future become louder and more constant.

Some students respond by obsessing over every decision.  Others avoid thinking about it completely.

Neither extreme is very helpful.

You do not need a final plan right now.

But you are already collecting information about yourself whether you realize it or not.

Core Idea

You do not need a final answer yet. You do need to start paying attention.

Your One Action

Start your Future Direction Clues note.

Write:

  • one type of work that interests you

  • one environment that seems appealing

  • one kind of problem-solving you enjoy

Examples:

  • working with people

  • leading teams

  • analyzing information

  • building things

  • solving technical problems

  • working independently

  • creative problem-solving

Then complete: “The reason this catches my attention is ______.”

If you've been keeping an Operating Manual, review it before completing this step.

Pay attention to recurring strengths, interests, environments, and patterns.
