Step 25

Exploring Colleges Intentionally

By junior year, it helps to start looking at colleges with a little more purpose.

Not because you need a final list right now, but because unfamiliar things tend to feel more stressful later.

A lot of students only know colleges by reputation or social media impressions.

Actual fit is usually more specific than that.

Core Idea

Exploring colleges early helps you notice what actually matters to you.

Your One Action

Start your College Fit Notes.

Choose two noticeably different colleges.

Examples:

  • large vs. small

  • city vs. suburban

  • close to home vs. farther away

  • public vs. private

Spend a few minutes exploring each school. For each one, write:

  • one thing that stands out

  • one thing you would want to know more about

Then complete: “The environment that currently feels more comfortable to me is ______.”

Look back at any future paths, careers, or interests you've explored previously. Do any connect to the colleges you're researching now? Do any of these colleges seem similar to environments where you've already done your best work?

Optional prompt: “The thing I noticed first was probably connected to ______.”
