Step 8

Following Through Even When Motivation Changes

Motivation is unreliable.

Some days you feel focused.

Other days even small tasks feel annoying or exhausting.

That is normal.

The problem is when you start believing you can only be productive when you feel motivated first.

Core Idea

You can still make progress on low-motivation days.

Your One Action

Start your Five-Minute Starts list.

Choose one task you have been avoiding:

  • starting an assignment

  • reviewing notes or studying

  • replying to an email

  • finishing missing work

Set a timer for 5 minutes and begin. Then write:

  • what task you started

  • how difficult it felt beforehand (1–10)

  • whether starting made it feel easier afterward

Optional prompt: “The thing I usually overthink before starting is ______.”
