Step 26

Understanding What Standardized Tests Actually Are

At some point during sophomore year, conversations about the PSAT, SAT, or ACT usually start becoming louder.

Some students get anxious immediately.

Others try not to think about it at all.

A lot of the stress around testing comes from uncertainty.

Core Idea

Standardized tests measure some skills. They do not measure your entire future.

Your One Action

Start your Testing Clarity Notes.

Write down every test you have heard about so far including the PSAT, SAT, ACT, AP exams and State tests. Then add:

  • one thing you already know

  • one thing you still feel unsure about

Optional prompt: “The part that currently feels most unclear is ______.”

Testing Clarity Notes

Optional Prompt Answer

Deeper Reflection

What part of standardized testing feels most unclear or intimidating to me right now? Do I think that feeling comes more from the test itself or from not fully understanding it yet?
