Step 28
Separating Scores From Self-Worth
Students sometimes attach meaning to scores long before they fully understand what those scores actually represent.
A disappointing result can easily turn into: "Maybe I'm just not smart enough."
But a score measures performance in a specific situation.
It does not summarize your intelligence, creativity, work ethic, character, or long-term potential.
Core Idea
A score can provide information without defining you.
Your One Action
Start your What This Does NOT Measure List.
Think about a time when a grade, a score or a result affected your confidence more than it probably should have. Then write:
What This Measured
Examples:
timing
preparation
understanding of specific material
focus during that moment
What This Did NOT Measure
Examples:
creativity
resilience
kindness
work ethic
long-term growth
character
leadership
curiosity
Optional prompt: “The story I started telling myself afterward was ______.”
What This Does NOT Measure
Optional Prompt Answer
Deeper Reflection
When I receive a disappointing result, what story do I usually start telling myself? Is that interpretation fully accurate?
