Step 10
Paying Attention to How You Use Your Time
Freshman year often feels busier than expected because students suddenly manage:
more classes
more homework
more activities
more social decisions
more independence
Many students say, “I don’t have enough time,” when what they really mean is: “I’ve never had to manage this many competing priorities before.”
Core Idea
Time becomes easier to manage when you can see where your energy is going.
Your One Action
Create your Energy Map weekly tool.
Write down the three things currently taking most of your time or energy.
Examples:
sports
gaming
social media
homework
commuting
activities
family responsibilities
friends
Next to each one, label it:
Gives Energy
Takes Energy
Mixed
Then complete: "One environment where I tend to have more energy is ______."
Examples:
smaller groups
hands-on activities
structured classes
independent work
being around people I know
This is about noticing patterns, not judging your habits. You may discover that something taking very little time can still drain a huge amount of mental energy — or the opposite.
