Step 11

Understanding That Avoiding Things Increases Stress

When something feels uncomfortable or overwhelming, most people instinctively avoid it for a while. That response is perfectly normal.  But avoided stress will grow in the background.

A missing assignment suddenly becomes several. A difficult conversation becomes more awkward. A quick task starts feeling enormous.

Core Idea

Avoidance usually increases stress more than the task itself. A lot of students discover that stress often shrinks once action starts and the anticipation is usually worse than taking the first step.

Your One Action

Create a running list called Things I Keep Delaying.

Add one thing you have been avoiding.

Examples:

  • checking a grade

  • starting an assignment

  • responding to an email

  • asking a question

  • organizing missing work

Now spend five minutes doing only the first small part. Afterward, add a quick note:

  • Was starting easier or harder than expected?

Many students notice that anticipation feels worse than starting.
