Step 14

Participating Before You Feel Completely Ready

Many freshmen assume confidence comes first. It usually does not.

Confidence develops afterward — after speaking once, showing up once, trying once, surviving the awkwardness once.  This applies to:

  • clubs

  • conversations

  • classes

  • friendships

  • activities

Core Idea

Confidence usually grows after participation, not before it.

Your One Action

Create your Tiny Courage Reps Note.

This week, add one small participation moment:

  • spoke once in class

  • asked a question

  • introduced yourself

  • attended something new

  • texted someone first

  • shared an idea

  • stayed after to talk briefly

For each entry, write:

  • What you did

  • Stress level before (1–10)

  • How it felt afterward

Optional: “The hardest part was actually ______.”
