Understanding That Activities Are for Learning About Yourself

Freshmen sometimes think activities only matter if:


  • they are impressive

  • they become long-term commitments

  • they immediately feel meaningful

  • they “look good”


But early activities are valuable for a simpler reason: they teach you things about yourself. Sometimes the useful discovery is: “I actually do not enjoy this.” And that still counts.

Activities are information.

Your One Action

Create your “Activity Data Log.” 


Add one activity you have:


  • tried

  • joined

  • considered

  • quit

  • returned to


Then complete:


  • “I liked…”

  • “I disliked…”

  • “This showed me that I probably…”


Examples:

  • prefer smaller groups

  • enjoy leadership

  • like structured goals

  • need creativity

  • enjoy competition

  • work better independently
