Many freshmen expect themselves to immediately:
find close friends
feel fully comfortable
know where they fit socially
feel confident everywhere
For most people, belonging develops much more gradually than that.
Usually through:
repeated experiences
familiarity
small interactions
shared routines
consistent participation
Not instant certainty.
