Step 34

Thinking About Summer More Realistically

Summer often gets treated like something students need to:

  • maximize

  • perfect

  • constantly improve

  • turn into an achievement competition

But most students benefit more from summers that include rest, recovery, and enjoyment.

While some exploration and some responsibility is fine, Freshman summer does not need to look impressive to be valuable.

Core Idea

A healthy summer includes both recovery and growth.

Your One Action

Start your Summer Balance Plan.

Write one thing you want in each category:

Recovery

Examples:

  • sleep better

  • feel calmer

  • spend more time outside

  • recharge mentally

Responsibility

Examples:

  • help at home

  • volunteering

  • summer work

  • learn something practical

Exploration

Examples:

  • try something new

  • visit somewhere different

  • read about an interest

  • learn a skill

Then circle: “The category I probably need most right now is ______.”
