Step 9

Learning How to Ask for Help Earlier

Students sometimes wait until stress becomes overwhelming before asking for help.

Usually because they:

  • feel embarrassed

  • do not want attention

  • think they should already know the answer

  • hope things will improve on their own

But support works better earlier than later.

Core Idea

Asking for help early often prevents problems from becoming bigger. Support is usually most useful before stress becomes overwhelming.

Your One Action

Start your People I Can Go To note.

Divide it into categories like:

  • school

  • friends

  • family

  • activities

  • personal support

Then add:

  • one person

  • what they are helpful for

  • one sentence you could realistically say to them

Example:

  • Math teacher — explaining assignments — “Can I ask about something confusing from class?”

You do not need a huge support system. Most students just need to stop feeling like they have to figure out everything alone. This list can keep growing bit by bit.
